The General Medical Council is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. It is dedicated to protecting patients across the four countries of the United Kingdom by ensuring high standards of medical education and practice. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups.

The Registration and Revalidation Directorate sits at the heart of the GMC, ensuring the successful delivery of the GMC’s registration and assessment operational functions. Each year, the Registration team manages tens of thousands of applications for registration, handles over 175,000 calls, through its contact centre and deals with over 100,000 emails.  Reporting to the Executive Director Registration and Revalidation and as a member of the GMC’s senior leadership team, the Assistant Director Registration will lead a diverse team of c.120 people and work across the GMC and with a range of external stakeholders, to ensure that performance targets are reached, within budget and to the required legislative and quality standards.

This is a significant and high-profile operational leadership role, coming at an exciting and challenging time of  unprecedented change for the GMC and our new Assistant Director will have the opportunity to contribute to the strategic development of registration and assessment functions in line with GMC corporate priorities within the current political climate and ahead of potential significant legislative change.

The postholder must have a successful track record in leading large, complex and multi-transactional operations, inspiring, motivating and developing diverse and high performing teams. Candidates will be politically astute, with the strategic vision to work and influence across the wider GMC. They will bring a clear focus on quality and continuous improvement, together with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the personal presence and ability to influence our many and varied stakeholders. This, together with keen intellect, vision, credibility and determination to get things done will make you a strong candidate for this uniquely interesting and demanding role.
