Assistant Director, Office of the Chief Operating Officer

The General Medical Council is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. It is dedicated to protecting patients across the United Kingdom by ensuring high standards of medical education and practice. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups. 

Integral to the work of the senior leadership team this is an exciting opportunity to provide high level support to our Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive, providing high quality advice and professional support while leading two teams based in our offices in London and Manchester.  The role will require an ability to think and plan strategically, manage complex and sensitive relationships, lead and participate in cross organisational programmes and lead our well-established Corporate Review and Corporate Business Planning teams. Additionally, you will have oversight of the annual Professional Standards Authority Standards of Good Regulation process.

To be successful in this role, you will have the capacity to analyse complex policy and operational issues, build rapport and influence with senior leaders and deal with the pressures that come at this level. You will have experience of organisational leadership and the management of high performing teams, ideally gained within a health/NHS, government, regulatory or a similar environment. You will bring the ability to play a visible, wider corporate leadership role, experience of developing and delivering operational initiatives and major corporate programmes and managing related work plans and budgets.

Politically astute, you will have the intellectual ability to understand complex legal, financial, policy and procedural documents, together with outstanding written and verbal communications skills. You will foster excellent relationships internally and externally at all levels.  Your keen intellect, vision, credibility and determination to get things done will make you a strong candidate for this uniquely interesting and demanding role.
