Working with doctors, working for patients

Head of Medical Licensing Assessments - Operations

When it goes live in 2022, the Medical Licensing Assessment will help the General Medical Council to make sure that doctors joining the register can meet a common threshold for safe. It represents a unique opportunity for a strategic leader who thrives in a complex and sensitive political environment.

The General Medical Council helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards, and take action when they are not met.

The Medical Licensing Assessment must be delivered as effectively as possible – and you will ensure that it is. You’ll lead work to build the operational structures and processes we need, so that they form a coherent set of processes, aligned with GMC policy.

As first point of escalation, you will proactively manage emerging issues and promote collaborative working.  In addition, you’ll offer expert advice and updates to the MLA Programme Board, prepare papers for governance groups, and also present at conferences and other events.

Together with a knowledge of policy and project management techniques, you’ll have experience of leading the delivery of operational processes in line with statutory and procedural frameworks.

Your robust communication skills will help you foster and facilitate debate, while your ability to engage colleagues and stakeholders will be vital.

Your talent for leadership, planning and prioritisation should ideally be underpinned by an understanding of the undergraduate medical education sector, though your operation management skills will truly set you apart.

In return, you’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people. We offer an attractive salary and benefits package.

The GMC values diversity and has made a public commitment to processes and procedures that are fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination.
