Working with doctors, working for patients

GMC Expert Witness in Cardiology

Help us maintain high medical standards

Experts in Cardiology

Who we are

The GMC is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK and helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards, and take action when they are not met.

As part of our role, we rigorously investigate complaints about the conduct or performance of medical practitioners to ensure they are fit to practise. Those investigations sometimes involve obtaining opinion from an independent expert in the field about the doctor’s treatment.

What we need

We are appointing experts to our approved expert witness list who are Cardiology specialists. This is high profile work, with a focus on protecting and promoting the quality of practice within the field.

To help our decision makers decide how to deal with cases, we need experts who clearly understand their role and can provide impartial, reasoned, and informative opinion on cases within their expertise. This will frequently involve discussing expert opinion by phone, providing written reports which are fully reasoned, explaining opinion orally and dealing with questions or challenges in Medical Practitioners Tribunal hearings.

We have published standards which set out clearly what we expect from experts, and guidance on what this involves at each stage of our investigations.

Expert requirements

Experts will:

  • be on the specialist register
  • work at Consultant level
  • work in the NHS
  • have experience of providing written and oral expert evidence and have undertaken training in this area.

We will pay an agreed fee for each report or hearing attendance, along with reasonable expenses.
