Working with doctors, working for patients

Assistant Director, Education Policy

The General Medical Council is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. It is dedicated to protecting patients and improving medical education and practise in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups. As part of it's drive to become a more agile, confident and connected regulator, the GMC has a unique opportunity to shape the training for today's and tomorrow's doctors.

Forming part of the senior leadership team, the Assistant Director for Education policy will lead the development of the GMC's educational policy framework. Engaging and working in close partnership with stakeholders to develop and shape policy from undergraduate education to speciality training, they will also manage a complex network of stakeholder relationships across the education landscape.

Enabling the GMC to improve medical education and training, the successful individual will bring a track record of success in developing significant strategic policy frameworks. Whether from a medical, regulatory, political or similar environment and ability to make sound decisions and to develop innovative solutions will be key. With an understanding of medical education, they will be appreciative of the political context in which the GMC is seeking to modernise medical regulation and able to navigate the sensitivities.

This is a significant and influential role and you will bring outstanding interpersonal skills, together with the credibility, personal presence and influencing skills to engage effectively with GMC's many and varied stakeholders. You will bring the intellect, vision, credibility and determination to inspire and empower a highly-skilled policy team and ensure that the GMC delivers against its strategic aims.
